The coal mining industry was very important to the war effort. Give reasons why you think this was the case.

The Prime Minister, Winston Churchill made many inspirational speeches during the war. His speeches raised the morale of ordinary people. This is what he said about the miners:

"Some day when our children say; 'what did you do to help win the war?',

Coal Miners
Coal Miners

one will say, 'I was a fighter pilot', another will say, 'I was in the submarine service', and another, 'I marched with the Eighth Army', a fourth will say, 'none of you could have lived without the courage of the merchant seamen', and you, in your turn will say with equal pride and equal right, 'we cut the coal'."

How do you think Churchill felt about the miners?
If you were a miner would you have been influenced by the above remarks? Give reasons.
