As we begin a new year and a new term, our shared focus is around “Making a Difference.”

January is often associated with New Year’s resolutions — promises we make with good intentions that can sometimes fade as the weeks pass. This year, however, I wanted our focus to be something more lasting and meaningful. As a school, we are committed to actions that will have a sustained and visible impact on our environment, our habits, and our community.

We are fortunate to be located within an area of outstanding natural beauty (the North Wessex Downs National Landscape), and with that comes both an opportunity and a responsibility. Over the coming months, we will be taking small but important steps to enhance our school environment and strengthen our Climate Action Plan. Our aim is not only to improve our physical surroundings, but also to help shape attitudes and behaviours for the future. Already this month, we have worked on educating students and staff about better waste management in school and introduced a more robust approach to dealing with litter.

I want to launch new environmental initiatives that encourage everyone to take ownership and pride in our shared spaces. Lasting change comes from consistent small actions, and together those actions will make a real difference.

This month was also an important one academically. Year 10 and Year 13 students sat their PPE examinations. These assessments provide valuable preparation and feedback, helping students and teachers identify strengths and next steps. Well done to all students involved for their preparation, and a positive and determined approach to the exams.

It was also a pleasure to welcome back our Year 13 students for a reunion and celebration event. It was wonderful to see them together again, reflecting on their journey and celebrating their achievements. We wish you all the very best for the future and hope you will continue to be part of the Little Heath community.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support. I look forward to seeing the many ways our students and staff will make a difference this term.

Mr David Ramsden
Headteacher

SHREK the Musical

We are so excited to announce that we will be performing Shrek the Musical this summer!

Shrek the Musical logo

Following hugely successful auditions earlier this month, with large numbers of students from all year groups, we have selected our main cast and ensemble.

Bowak help to tackle litter at Little Heath

The start of term saw a renewed effort to improve the litter problem at school, and to support staff and students with recycling and managing waste.

With a refreshed approach to the daily tutor litter picks, we now have two tutor groups litter picking during each afternoon registration. By zoning the grounds, it means students can make a big difference to an area of the school within a short space of time.

Litter Picking Zones

We are also planning more regular, half-termly community litter picks in the roads surrounding the school, and down to the Turnhams Farm Recreation Ground.

In order to maximise the number of students litter picking at any one time, we reached out to Theale-based company, Bowak, suppliers of cleaning, hygiene and catering products, who kindly offered to donate 15 brand new litter pickers, a large box of black bin liners and two boxes of gloves.

Bowak Litter Picking Group

Bowak's Territory Manager, Emma Harvey, and Marketing Executive, Lauren Smith, joined Mr Ramsden, alongside students from the Eco-Committee and the team of Sustainability Prefects, to take part in one of our school site litter picks.

Year 7 Litter Picking with the team from Bowak

It was encouraging to see the daily litter picks were making a difference already, as the litter levels were noticeably less. However, we were still able to fill a few bags from around the bins and the perimeters where litter had collected in the wind.

A huge thank you to Bowak for supporting our efforts and for helping students to take responsibility for looking after their environment, both inside and outside school.

KS4 The Globe Players Visit

We welcomed The Globe Players back into school this month to perform for our Year 9, 10 and 11 students.

The Globe Players perform Macbeth

We enjoyed performances of Romeo and Juliet for our Year 9 students, Macbeth for our Year 10 students and An Inspector Calls for our Year 11 students.

It was a fantastic day bringing theatre to school, and for supporting the learning and understanding of our GCSE texts.

Year 12 Trip to Parliament

This month, 26 Year 12 A-Level Politics students took part in a tour of Parliament. They saw the House of Commons and House of Lords in action during a debate, and also met our local MP, Olivia Bailey.

Y12 Tour Parliament

The tour focused on the history of the Houses of Parliament, with students seeing Westminster Hall, the Lobby and St. Stephens Hall, which is where the Houses of Commons originally sat during Medieval times.

Y12 Tour Parliament

Whilst in the public gallery of the House of Commons and House of Lords, we saw debates taking place in both chambers. We were extremely lucky to be able to speak to Olivia Bailey, our local Member of Parliament, who told us about some of her work for the local constituency as well as her views on current issues facing the country.

Finally, the students engaged in a walking tour of Westminster which included seeing 10 Downing Street and Buckingham Palace. Students came away with an enhanced understanding of the workings of Parliament and the locations of power in the United Kingdom.

Year 13 (2024-25) Reunion Event

It was a joy to welcome our former Year 13 students back for a special afternoon dedicated to reconnecting and celebrating their achievements of the last academic year.

Former Y13 students receive their awards

The event provided a wonderful opportunity for students to catch up with one another, share their experiences since leaving, and spend time speaking with their former teachers.

History celebrate with former Y13 students

Throughout the afternoon, a range of awards and certificates were presented in recognition of their hard work and successes. It was a pleasure to see so many familiar faces and hear about the exciting paths our students have taken.

Former Y13 students catch up and celebrate together

Thank you to everyone who attended and helped make the event such an enjoyable and memorable afternoon.

Reading every day is one of the simplest and most powerful habits children can develop. Daily reading strengthens the brain, expands vocabulary, boosts imagination, and improves focus — all while helping children to build empathy and confidence.

Each month, we will be recommending books for students in each key stage. Take a look at our January recommendations, inspired by recent film releases and tv programmes…

To celebrate the release of the new film, starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi...

Wuthering Heights
by Emily Brontë

Lockwood, the new tenant of Thrushcross Grange, situated on the bleak Yorkshire moors, is forced to seek shelter one night at Wuthering Heights, the home of his landlord.

There he discovers the history of the tempestuous events that took place years before; of the intense relationship between the gypsy foundling Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw; and how Catherine, forced to choose between passionate, tortured Heathcliff and gentle, well-bred Edgar Linton, surrendered to the expectations of her class.

As Heathcliff's bitterness and vengeance at his betrayal is visited upon the next generation, their innocent heirs must struggle to escape the legacy of the past.

Business & Economics Journal

7 students. 6 articles. 4,500 words.

Welcome to the inaugural edition of the Little Heath School Business & Economics Journal.

This project has tied in beautifully with our department vision:

"Creating informed and discerning employees, employers, consumers and citizens"

Year 12 CanSat Team

Year 12 students, Maxim, Jasmai and Atharv, are participating in the European Space Agency's CanSat Competition and have been fundraising to build a model satellite and represent Little Heath School and the UK at the international finals in the Netherlands!

{item_alt_tag}

They aimed to raise £400 to be spent on 3D printing, mechanical and electronic components, which will then be launched 400m in the air on a model rocket.

The students organised a bake sale and science challenges in order to raise funds for their project, and we are pleased to say they raised £329! This is on top of the £300 raised via their GoFundMe page! Thank you to all of you who donated, and bought cakes from their stalls.

Follow them, the Delta-V Divas, on Instagram, YouTube and TikTok for updates on their progress. You can also donate here: https://gofund.me/8f85a8164

Beth visits Mend the Gap funded project she designed for her EPQ

Former Year 13 student, Beth, visited school this month after the first phase of our outdoor learning and nature space was completed, thanks to the grant by Mend the Gap.

{item_alt_tag}

Beth left Sixth Form in the summer and has started studying Architecture and Environmental Engineering at the University of West England. She was thrilled to finally see her design come to life! She has named the shelter the 'Bee Room' as a nod to her name, and for her love for bees and nature, and has created a beautiful handmade sign using pyrography on an old fence panel.

Our Year 9 5-a-side football team played in a tournament against four teams earlier this month.

If you have an interest in photography or creative activities, full details of both competitions and their rules can be found here: Holybrook Parish Competition Details 2026
