Welcome back. I hope you all enjoyed a restful half-term break.
At the start of February, we were proud to support Children’s Mental Health Week. Alongside dedicated activities and discussions in school, we also held our well-attended Extra-Curricular Activities Fair, giving students the opportunity to explore the wide range of clubs, teams and enrichment opportunities available. Getting involved beyond the classroom is an important part of wellbeing, helping students to build friendships, develop confidence and feel connected to our school community.
As our Year 11 students end their PPEs, an important milestone in their preparation for the summer examinations, we are encouraging them to stay focused, keep on top of revision and make the most of the support available. The effort invested now will certainly pay off in the months ahead.
Our Year 13 students experienced their PPE Results Day this week. This provides a valuable opportunity to reflect on their progress and refine their approach as they move towards their final examinations.
Meanwhile, Year 8 students have been making important decisions about their GCSE options. This is an exciting stage in their school journey, and staff have been supporting them through taster sessions, guidance and discussion to help them make informed choices. As applications are submitted this week, we will be holding individual Options Meetings next month to review and confirm their selections.
Finally, I was pleased to launch a competition this week inviting students to help name our new nature space. We were fortunate to have some investment in this area by Mend the Gap, enabling us to make positive use of a neglected part of the school grounds. I very much hope many of our students will take part — it is a wonderful opportunity to leave a lasting mark on our school environment. More details are in the newsletter article below.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support.
Mr David Ramsden

Children's Mental Health Week
This month, we took part in activities for Children’s Mental Health Week.
With this year’s theme, “This Is Our Place”, we focused on sustaining a school community where every student feels a sense of belonging. Throughout the week, tutor sessions completed a range of mental health activities designed to encourage reflection, open conversations and positive wellbeing strategies.

We also hosted an Extra-Curricular Activities Fair in the Sports Hall for all year groups, giving students the opportunity to explore clubs, discover new hobbies and ultimately find their place within our wider school community.

Members of our Senior Student Leadership Team and our Year 12 Prefects shared important messages about mental health in a special video, which you can watch here: Children’s Mental Health Week Video

Together, we strive to build a safe, supportive environment where everyone feels seen, heard and valued.
Sixth Form Trip to Disneyland Paris
78 Sixth Form students kicked off the half-term break with a three-day trip to Disneyland Paris.

Packed full of rides, their favourite Disney characters and a spectacular firework display, the trip was one they will remember for many years to come!

"Disneyland Paris was an exceptional trip, we had so much fun, and it was a perfect way to relax after a week of PPEs. We would highly recommend the trip. It was an exciting weekend, and we made lots of memories. We really appreciate all of the effort from Mr and Mrs Jessop that went into planning it."
Anya and Jessie, Year 13
Fundraising for Make-a-Wish Foundation
Sixth Form students held their first fundraiser in aid of the Make-a-Wish Foundation. Staff and Sixth Formers were invited to dress in outfits inspired by what they wanted to be when they were younger.

The lower school students were invited to buy a tasty treat from the bake sale, and to pie one of our brave volunteer teachers!

Well done to everyone who took part and for helping to raise almost £400 for the charity.

It has been a very busy month of February in Key Stage 3.
The Year 7 football team has just started their 2026 campaign, getting through to the semi-final of the 5-a-side cup where, unfortunately, they were beaten.
In the County Cup, they have progressed through to the 3rd round, which is great to hear.

The Football League starts in early March, and we are hoping for a Top 3 finish – come on the Year 7 boys.
Before half-term, the KS3 Team, along with Mr Coulson & Ms Jones, spent a week undertaking Learning Walks to observe how Year 7 were engaging with their learning, and we were very impressed with how most pupils were really trying to engage with their learning, which was great to see.
In Year 8, the Options process is now well under way.
We also had the Year 8 Interim/Spring Reports sent home to give a current snapshot of Engagement with Learning and Progress within the H/I/F Band.
This was followed by the Year 8 Parents’ Evening, with a good uptake of parents making appointments with subject teachers to discuss progress in subjects but also ask about potential Option choices.
Several Year 8 pupils attended the History Department’s ‘Classics for All’ trip to Reading University, where they took part in a hieroglyphics workshop, an A.I. workshop and then, making their own precious jewels. They also had a tour of the campus. What an experience for these young Historians.

Congratulations to the two Tutor Groups, 7-KCA and 8-RFA who both topped the leader board for the most number of House Points (HPs) awarded in February, so far, for their year group.
- 7-KCA have been awarded a massive 480 HPs.
- 8-RFA have been awarded a very impressive 305 HPs.
Well done to each and every member of those Tutor Groups and keep trying to earn even more HPs.
The average number of HPs awarded across the 20 Tutor Groups in KS3 was 243 HPs, which is brilliant to see, so everyone in KS3 – keep trying to earn those all-important HPs.
Remember, every HP awarded helps towards the House Competition!
As always, thank you for your ongoing support in ensuring your children are fully equipped for school and in the correct school uniform, arrive on time and for your time spent ensuring all homework is completed to the best of their ability. It is very much appreciated.
Mr Rayner and the KS3 Team
February is a quick month in school, but we have still managed to pack a lot into Key Stage 4. Students have embraced our whole school approach to litter picking – we hope that it helps students not only give something back to the school environment but think more carefully about looking after the school site and having the confidence to call out their peers who drop litter.
In the last week of the half-term, it was great to see so many visiting the extra-curricular fair and actively involved in Children's Mental Health Week. Walking round the tutor groups on the last day of term and seeing the variety of wellbeing tasks students were completing with their tutors made me realise what a brilliant relationship students have with their tutors and what a fabulous group of young people we have at LHS.
Year 9 have been busy getting stuck into their GCSEs and I cannot believe they are now 6 months into their courses. The Food and Nutrition group have been busy making bird cakes and Year 9 students were lucky enough to see Risking it All from theatre production company 2engage, which was to raise awareness of illegal vaping, criminal exploitation and cannabis use in young people.

Year 10 are now more than halfway through their GCSEs and should be acting on the feedback from their January PPEs as well as completing coursework which, for many courses, was due in on Friday 13 February. Year 10 Drama students participated in a devising workshop and our Citizenship students in a Q&A session with local MP Olivia Bailey.

For Year 11 the focus is now very much on preparing for GSCEs, and they had their final set of PPEs in the weeks before and after half-term. We are incredibly proud of how well they have conducted themselves in the exams and how reflective they have been on what they need to do to achieve their best in the final exams. With only five weeks in Term 4, this is going to be a quick term for us all, and I urge all Key Stage 4 students to make the most of the learning with excellent attendance and punctuality to lessons, as well as working hard in and out of lessons, as well as enjoying their extra-curricular activities to aid relaxation.

Reading every day is one of the simplest and most powerful habits children can develop. Daily reading strengthens the brain, expands vocabulary, boosts imagination, and improves focus — all while helping children to build empathy and confidence.
Each month, we will be recommending books for students in each key stage. Take a look at our February recommendations, inspired by Children's Mental Health Week. All of these books were chosen as the 2025 winners in the 'Best Kids’ Books for Mental Health' list, published by the Child Mind Institute: "every child deserves to read a story that they can see themselves in."

The book follows Pernell, a black teen with ADHD, as he navigates the challenges of summer school and the complexities of adolescence.
Pernell's journey is marked by his desire to become the leader of his school's freestyle rap circle, and his struggle to succeed despite the pressures and challenges he faces.

Tub2Pub Sweet Tub Recycling
Thank you to everyone who donated chocolate, sweet and cracker tubs to our annual House competition. We collected over 520 tubs this year for the Greene King Tub2Pub scheme.
|
|
It was a close competition towards the end, but this was the final result:
- 1st Stirling: 178
- 2nd Arundel: 145
- 3rd Conway: 122
- 4th Warwick: 80
Well done Stirling!
This year, 145 of the tubs have been donated to the Technology department to be used as food waste collection tubs during practical sessions, and also if students haven't bought in a container to take home their baking. It's great to be able to reuse the tubs in this way, meaning we can maximise the amount of food waste collected in Food and Nutrition, and Hospitality lessons, and means we don't need to purchase any new containers for this purpose.
The remaining 375+ tubs were delivered to the Water Tower pub in Tilehurst to be sent for recycling. All the tubs recycled through Greene King's Tub2Pub scheme raise money for MacMillan Cancer Support. Last year, the scheme raised almost £11,000 for the charity. Thanks for your support!
We will be collecting the tubs again next year, so please keep hold of them, but reuse them where you can.

Year 9 Make Cakes for the Birds
Year 9 Food and Nutrition students tried a different recipe this month and cooked up a feast for our feathered friends.
|
|
The winter is a difficult time for birds who often struggle to find food. The Year 9s made special bird cakes in second-hand mugs to hang around the school site, including in our new nature space. The bird cakes will provide much needed fats which are high in calories and easy to digest, making them a quick source of fuel.
|
|
|
If you would like to join us in feeding the birds, you can make your own bird cakes at home using the following instructions:
1. Either use an old, unwanted mug like us, or use a yoghurt pot and carefully make a small hole in the bottom. Thread string through the mug handle or the hole and tie a knot. Leave enough string so that you can tie the pot to a tree.
2. If you’re using lard, allow the fat to warm up to room temperature, but don’t melt it. Then cut it up into small pieces and put it in the mixing bowl.
3. Add bird seed, raisins and grated cheese to the bowl and mix them together with your fingertips. Keep adding the mixture and squidging it until the fat holds it all together. This bit can get quite sticky.
4. Fill your mugs/yoghurt pots with the bird cake mixture and put them in the fridge to set for an hour or two.
5. Hang your bird cakes from trees. Watch for Robins, Tits, Blackbirds and Sparrows.

Name our Nature Space
This month, Mr Ramsden launched a competition to name the new Nature Space.
In this video, he walks you round the new space, shows you what has been achieved so far, and what we are planning to do next: https://youtu.be/LgYddSmjNdM
|
|
Many students will be invited out to work on the space over the next few weeks in time for the official naming ceremony on Thursday 19 March.
We are inviting students to give us their suggestions for the space using the online form by Monday 9 March. Be creative! We'd love to capture the feel of the space and what we want to achieve for biodiversity, outdoor learning and wellbeing.

Oxford University Offer for Year 13, Emma
We were thrilled to hear that Emma in Year 13 has been offered a conditional place at St Hugh's College, University of Oxford, to read chemistry in September with grade requirements of A*A*A.
|
|
Emma says: "Prior to the offer, I had to go through 4 interviews, each of which held aspects of maths and organic/inorganic/physical chemistry, with around 3–4 specialist interviewers from the college, each time."
Initially, Emma was hesitant to apply. "I was extremely doubtful of how successful I'd be due to the highly competitive cohort and the huge number of applicants, but I was pleasantly surprised to receive my offer in January after a month-long wait following the interviews."
It is an unbelievably exciting opportunity for Emma, "Regardless of the results in the summer, I am beyond delighted to have even received an offer to study there. Both the city and the university are ideal to me, and it would be a wonderful place to carry on my academic journey."
Well done Emma, we are so proud of you and hope you achieve your goal this summer!

Double Win for Year 8 Boxer, Finley!
At the start of the half-term break, Year 8 student, Finley, competed in the New Era International Box Cup, with nine countries entering.
After making his way through a number of rounds, he competed in the final and brought home the champions Gold Belt, which was brilliant!
|
|
At the end of the half-term break, Finley took part in the Wales Gurreilla Box Cup (with boxers from all four home Nations) and won the competition to bring home the Gold, once again!!
What an amazing half-term ‘holiday’ this young boxer has had, and we will continue to follow and support his boxing journey.
Well done Finley!

Year 12 UK CanSat Team Update
The Year 12 team of Science enthusiasts, named the Delta-V Divas, have just received the score for their Critical Design Review of the UK CanSat Competition and are currently waiting to hear if they have made it through to the national finals! The aim of the competition is to design and build their own simulation of a real satellite, integrated within the volume and shape of a soft drink can.
|
|
This month, they enlisted the support of the Berkshire Fire Service at the Caversham Fire Station for their project. The aim of the visit was to create a foundation for their outreach and Delta-V Divas brand, which is all about aerial firefighting, but also to demonstrate their local community connection and intention to represent Little Heath, Reading and Berkshire on the world stage.
|
|
Maxim said: "We wanted to showcase the link between our own global space innovation with something as local as the impact from our fire service."
"We had a fantastic conversation with the firefighters who all commented on our design and provided wonderful feedback and advice. They mentioned the technological innovation of firefighting drones used in urban environments, which not only legitimised our own design, but opened our mind to more applications beyond just wildfires. Our CanSat has a water bay which will be deployed above fires to help save lives."
Well done to Maxim, Jasmai and Atharv on their dedication to this competition. We will up date you on their progress next month...hopefully with good news!
