As we approach the Easter break, this term has seen our school community embracing opportunities for our students to have their voices heard, celebrate diversity, and take meaningful action in shaping both their learning and their environment.
Our Student Voice Conference showcased the maturity, insight and enthusiasm of our student body. We value their thoughts and actively welcome their suggestions as we work together to improve life at school for everyone.
We take great pride in celebrating the rich diversity of our school. Our Cultural Celebration Evening remains one of my highlights of the school calendar. In addition, we were honoured to host our first Iftar gathering, providing a meaningful opportunity for staff and students to come together in reflection and shared experience during Ramadan. These events truly reflect our commitment to inclusion, respect and belonging.
Our commitment to sustainability and the environment has also taken an exciting step forward with the opening of our new nature space, named the ‘Little Heath Haven’. This area will provide students with opportunities to connect with the natural world, support wellbeing, and engage in outdoor learning.
Our commitment to innovation and sustainability has also been exemplified by a group of Year 12 Computer Science students, who have made remarkable progress through their ‘Classroom of the Future’ project. This month, they presented their ideas to a panel at the final of the Westcoast Bright Sparks Stellar Award, where they were deservedly crowned winners. As a result, they have been awarded £25,000 in technology to help bring their vision to life—an outstanding achievement and a truly exciting opportunity for our whole school community. You can read more in this month’s newsletter, and I look forward to sharing more of this project with you as it progresses.
As always, I would like to thank you for your continued support. I wish everyone a restful Easter break and look forward to the final term ahead.
Mr David Ramsden

Our students are at the heart of everything we do at Little Heath. We value their thoughts and welcome their suggestions for working together to improve life at school for us all.

The Student Voice Conference is about allowing pupils to express their ideas and to work with others across different year groups to discuss key issues. This year, around 100 students from years 7–10, took part in the conference, alongside members of the Sixth Form Prefects team. The theme this year was 'Students as Learning Partners'.

We opened the conference with a Q&A with Olivia Bailey MP, who is now also the Junior Minister for the Department for Education, where students asked key questions, including:
What are the government doing to support reading, when we are seeing a drop in numbers attending local libraries?
What does she think about the cost of tuition fees for higher education?
How are the government working to increase school funding?

Students then split into groups attending workshops to discuss...
The role of students in taking responsibility for school and the local environment, focusing on attitudes and solutions to litter
Leading their own learning journey through school and owning their progress
Developing student leadership to drive improvement, and
Literacy across the curriculum and how they can influence positive changes
Governors were also on hand to answer questions by the students. It gave them an insight into the role of a school governor and why they give up their time to help the school in this way. Bryan, explained why he choose to become a governor after his career as an Engineer "My career wouldn't have been possible without schools. I have the time so I wanted to give something back".

All the sessions resulted in some great suggestions and thought-provoking discussions. Issues discussed at the conference and matters arising will feed into strategic work related to these key areas.
Thanks to all the students who took part, to Olivia Bailey MP and our governors. We know there will be many positive changes for the benefit of all our school community which will have come today's discussions.
Earlier this month, our school community came together to share a special Iftar meal. Students and staff gathered to break the fast, enjoy delicious food, and spend time together in a warm and welcoming atmosphere, with lots of fun and smiles all round.

It was a wonderful opportunity to learn more about Ramadan and its traditions, celebrate together, and strengthen the sense of community that makes our school so special.

Thank you to Mr Ahmad and everyone who helped organise the event, and to all who joined us for such a meaningful evening.
We had a fabulous time with Year 11 on their Celebration Day. Seeing them in their crazy costumes is always quite a sight, and they did not disappoint this year!

It was a true celebration of their past five years at Little Heath with their friends and the staff that have supported them along the way.

Their leavers' yearbook, and their celebration assembly, took them down memory lane together. There were lots of laughs, smiling faces and, of course, some tears.

Now is the final push for their exams. Keep revising, put in the hard work and enjoy the rewards when the summer comes!

It has been a very busy period here in KS3 with lots going on!
Year 7 highlights:
Well done to the Year 7s for their dedication during the Praise Fortnight. A huge amount of praise was given to Year 7 pupils.

Students enjoyed an RE trip to Westminster Abbey. The purpose of the trip was to gain an understanding of Christian belief and practice, with a guided tour by the Westminster Learning Team, focusing on belief and practice. They also enjoyed a guided visit to the Queen’s Galleries.
Year 7 met with representatives from different companies to take part in the "What's My Job?" event this month. Small groups of students questioned the volunteers to learn about their trade and try to work out what job they do. This event introduces students to a wide range of jobs that are available to them, broadening their horizons and encouraging them to aim high.

Sporting success with the boys’ football team winning the Year 7 Reading league – brilliant result! Well done to the team and coaches.
The girls’ netball teams have represented the school extremely well this month, and it’s great to see so many participating.
We hope you found the reports useful and informative. We have the online virtual Year 7 Parents’ Evening on Thursday 23 April from 4.30pm to 7.30pm where you will have an opportunity to discuss your child's progress. A separate letter has been sent out about how and when to book appointments.
Year 8 highlights:
Year 8 pupils have had their KS4 Options interviews with a member of SLT or the KS3 Team to finalise their choices for the courses they wish to study for the next three years.

Some Year 8 students helped with our new nature space, as well as spending time preparing it for its opening.
Year 8 enjoyed a day completing the 'Champions of Enterprise' event. Students were asked: “What would you do with the land to best promote biodiversity and healthy ecosystems?” Their creative ideas were part of a real-world project by Biocap, in collaboration with Sulham Estate, aiming to transform 130 hectares of arable land on the edge of Tilehurst into a thriving wildlife haven.

Congratulations also to Rasmeen who won the competition to name the area – she suggested "Little Heath Haven" which was chosen by Mr Ramsden from over 130 entries. You can read more about the opening event in the Eco Update below.
The Windsor Castle trip was very enjoyable.
The boys U13s football team are top of the league, with 5 wins from 5 games, scoring 12 goals and only conceding 1 goal, so have the best goal difference in the league! Well done them.
My final highlight goes to Mia in 8RFA, and Rasmeen, who made one of the best things I have ever seen – a working volcano, for the Geography House Competition. See the results in the House News below.
(Yes – that is real ‘smoke’ coming out of the volcano!)
Finally, on a personal note, I would like to say a massive thank you to you as parents and carers for all the support you have given us over the last term and beyond, and for the support you will continue to give moving forward. I would also like to wish you a very Happy Easter.
Please stay safe and enjoy some quality time with family and friends.
Mr Rayner and the KS3 Team
This half-term may only have been 5 weeks, but we have squeezed a lot into KS4, and it has been an incredibly busy and productive one for Years 9, 10 and 11.
Year 10 have taken part in both Parents’ Evening and their mock interviews, gaining valuable experience for the future, while
Year 9 have been hard at work completing their Pre‑Public Examinations. This is their first go at revising for a number of GCSE subjects at once and we are really proud of their positive attitude to revision and resilience. Both Y9 and Y10 represented the school brilliantly at the Student Voice Conference.
Year 11 have had an especially full schedule, upgrading coursework, completing practical examinations in subjects such as Technology, and rounding off the term with a fantastic Celebration Day on 27 March. A huge well done to Y11 for embracing the dressing up theme with such enthusiasm and being great fun throughout the day. Wishing everyone a wonderful and well‑deserved break, and to Year 11 in particular—work hard, but make sure to rest too, ready for the upcoming GCSE exams.
Mrs Rayner
Assistant Head - KS4
This month our Year 12s participated in the Student Voice Conference, supporting the sessions in their role as prefects. They also took part in the 'Safe Drive, Stay Alive' event. Aimed at educating young people about road safety and responsible driving.

Thanks to Year 12s, Maxim and Hadassah, who joined me at Crosfields School for their Post-16 Careers Fair. We were the only state school in attendance and the students represented Little Heath and sold our Sixth Form brilliantly to the participants. The invitation to this event is an example of our reputation in the area. Our student representatives did us proud!

We are so proud of an incredible team of Year 12 Computer Science students who won the Westcoast Bright Sparks Stellar Award this month. Their proposal for a 'Classroom of the Future' won the school a huge £25,000 prize of tech, including tablets and styluses, will bring their vision to life at Little Heath. Read more in the news article here: Little Heath School - Students Win £25,000 of Technology in Westcoast's Bright Sparks Competition

Year 12 will return to their PPEs after the Easter break, so keep working hard!
Year 13 students have already completed some practical A level exams this month. Well done to our musicians for their recital evening, and for recording their A level pieces for submission. We were treated to some amazing performances by our talented students.

Keep up the revision over the Easter holiday. There is still time for you to put in the work now for it to pay off in the summer exams.
Mr Jessop
Head of Sixth Form

Celebrating Reading at Our School: National Year of Reading
This year, our school has fully embraced the National Year of Reading, launching a range of exciting initiatives designed to inspire a love of books across all year groups. From creative competitions to new clubs and supportive reading programmes, it has been fantastic to see so many students getting involved.
|
|
One of the highlights so far has been our Reading Buddies scheme, which pairs Year 12 students with Year 7 students in the library. This initiative has created a supportive environment where younger students can build confidence in their reading, while older students take on a valuable mentoring role. It has already proven to be a rewarding experience for everyone involved.
|
|
We also launched a Book Redesign House Competition for World Book Day this month, in which students were challenged to reimagine the covers of their favourite books, and the response was incredible with over 100 entries submitted. The creativity and effort on display made judging difficult, and it was wonderful to see students engaging so thoughtfully with literature in such an artistic way.
|
|
|
To encourage reading beyond the classroom, we recently opened a Book Swap Shelf. This allows students to bring in books from home and exchange them for something new to read. The shelf has quickly become a popular feature, helping to build a sense of community around reading and making books more accessible to all.
|
|
Our lunchtime clubs have also been a big success. On Mondays, students can attend “Snacks and Stories”, where they can relax with a good book and enjoy some biscuits. Meanwhile, Thursdays bring “Comics and Cookies”, a club dedicated to exploring the world of comics and graphic novels in a fun and informal setting. Both clubs have created welcoming spaces for students to share their love of reading with friends.
|
|
|
In addition, we have made some exciting updates to our DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) time. These changes are designed to both support and challenge students in their reading journeys. A new DEAR bookmark will be introduced to help guide students, with even more developments planned after Easter.
Overall, it has been a fantastic start to our National Year of Reading celebrations. We are proud of the enthusiasm shown by our students and look forward to building on this momentum in the months ahead.
Happy reading!

Energy Sparks Audit
We have been working with Energy Sparks since September 2024. They are a charity working with schools to help them lower their energy consumption, cut costs and reduce their impact on the environment.
|
|
Over that time, we have been looking at ways to save energy use across the school. We have adjusted heating settings both during the school day and over holiday periods, set up department shutdowns before each holiday, automated shutdowns of computers and screens, and worked to change the behaviour of our school community.
We are pleased to say that following a recent audit of the school through Energy Sparks, our hard work is paying off. We have now moved into the 'Exemplar' category for gas use – this is a comparison between secondary schools using Energy Sparks across the UK. This is a huge achievement!
|
|
|
The holiday shutdowns are also having a huge impact on electricity use. As an example, the savings on kWh from February half term 2025 to 2026 was 45%. We have not only reduced energy use by almost half, but also the cost to the school was half. The more energy we can save, the better for the environment and the school funds, allowing us to put this money into further enhancing students' learning experience at Little Heath.
|
|
|
The energy audit report highlights strong progress but clear opportunities to cut costs and carbon in the future. While solar panels and improved controls are helping reduce electricity use, we still have a high out-of-hours consumption and inefficient heating—especially in older buildings.
The report recommends better insulation, improved heating controls, and increased staff and student engagement to drive further energy savings and move towards net zero. We still have some way to go, but together we are making a huge difference, and for that we should be immensely proud.

Cultures Celebration Evening and 'Celebration of Cultures' Day
On Tuesday 24 March, we held our 2026 Cultures Evening, and the preparation went incredibly well thanks to the support of our teachers and Diversity Prefects.
|
|
We hope everyone had a fantastic time and enjoyed the celebration of different cultures. A huge thank you to all the performers. You guys were truly amazing and made the evening so special.

|
|
|
Our celebration of culture continued on Thursday 26 March, when staff and students were invited to dress in their cultural colours or traditional dress.
|
|
It was wonderful to see so many colourful outfits and students embracing their heritage with pride!
Thanks to all the students who ran stalls at break time, selling an array of cultural snacks from around the world.

Hannah raises £1,580 for Cancer Research UK
Congratulations to Year 12 students, Hannah and Maxim, who completed the Reading Half Marathon this month.
It was the first time Hannah had taken part in the event, and she really enjoyed the experience:
"The crowd and atmosphere really motivated me the whole way!! It was amazing to push myself, especially towards the end for a sprint finish, ending with a time of 1hr 55mm, way better than I initially ever imagined!! My family and friends were cheering me on in the stadium and throughout the course which always gave me a burst of energy when I was needing it."
|
|
Hannah chose to raise money for Cancer Research UK and surprised herself with how much she raised:
"I'm over the moon with the amount of money raised, finally reaching over £1,500!! This is a cause that means a lot to my family, as well as so many others."
"The support throughout the whole experience and training has been so incredible, and I can't wait to do it again next year!!".
Thanks to everyone who donated to Hannah and supported her and Maxim on the day.
|
|
Congratulations also go to our staff runners who completed the Reading Half Marathon this month too. Well done to Miss Parslow, Mr Bond, Mr Greenslade, Mr Coulson, Mr Martin, Ms Elsdon, Mr Taylor and Miss Murphy.

Young Magistrates
Year 9 students took part in the Young Magistrates competition held on Saturday 14 March at Reading Magistrates Court, where they competed against two other schools playing the roles of lawyer, witness, magistrate, legal advisor, usher and court reporter.
|
|
All the students represented the school very well. All the judges, dignitaries and other magistrates who watched commented on how mature and well-prepared our team was. They were a real credit to Little Heath School.
While they did not come in the top two for the competition, they worked fantastically as a team and rose to the occasion superbly. Well done to all the students who took part.
|
|
Young Enterprise
Students from Year 10 and Year 12 represented the school at the Young Enterprise Trade Fair held at Royal Windsor Shopping Centre earlier this month. The event brought together student companies from across the region, giving them the opportunity to showcase and sell their products in a real retail environment.
|
|
Students were responsible for promoting their products, engaging with customers, and managing transactions throughout the day which allowed them to develop a range of key entrepreneurial and employability skills.
|
|
The Year 10 company, Case Armour, sold a popular Mobile Phone Accessories Goody Bag. Each bundle included a mobile phone stand, phone and iPod cleaning kit, magnetic charger, and a mobile phone sticky pad, offering customers a useful set of everyday tech accessories.
|
|
Meanwhile, the Year 12 company Yours Truly focused on personalised gifts, selling customised mugs which proved very popular with shoppers looking for unique and thoughtful items.
|
|
Both teams worked extremely hard throughout the day and were rewarded with strong sales. Together, the two companies generated over £180 in revenue, a fantastic achievement and a testament to the students’ preparation, teamwork, and enthusiasm.
The experience gave students a valuable insight into the realities of running a business and demonstrated the creativity, confidence, and enterprise skills developing within our Young Enterprise teams.
