WHY STUDY THIS SUBJECT?

Core Maths is an excellent way to strengthen your mathematical skills alongside your other courses. Although it is not an A Level, it is a recognised Level 3 qualification and carries the same UCAS Tariff points as an AS Level qualification, with up to 20 UCAS points available depending on the grade achieved. There are several universities who will reduce their conditional offer should a student also have a qualification in Core Maths.

The course is particularly useful for students studying subjects such as Business, Economics, Psychology, Geography, Biology and the social sciences, where mathematical and statistical skills are increasingly important. It develops valuable problem-solving and analytical skills that are highly regarded by universities and employers.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Core Maths is for students who have achieved at least a Grade 4 in GCSE Mathematics and want to continue developing their mathematical skills without taking A Level Maths. It focuses on applying maths to real-life situations, helping students become more confident and capable users of mathematics in both academic and everyday contexts.

SYLLABUS

The course covers a range of practical and relevant topics, including:

  • Personal finance, such as loans, mortgages, taxation and budgeting

  • Statistics and data analysis

  • Probability and risk

  • Estimation and mathematical modelling

  • Interpreting graphs, charts and real-world data

  • Critical Path Analysis, a project-planning technique widely used in business and industry

  • Problem-solving using mathematics in realistic scenarios

These topics help students understand how mathematics is used in everyday life, the workplace and higher education.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED AND EXAMINED?

You will have two calculator papers at the end of year 12, both worth 60 marks. You will be graded A-E from the total score of both papers. Pre-requisite material is released on the 1st March and you will prepare for your exams based on this material between March and your examinations in May with the support of your teacher.

FUTURE COURSES AND POSSIBLE CAREERS

Whether you are planning to attend university, begin an apprenticeship or move directly into employment, Core Maths provides practical mathematical skills that will support your future studies, career and everyday decision-making.
