Bicycle Licences and Bike Safety

We have had some reports of unsafe behaviour by our students on the way to and from school, this includes students who travel on foot and by bicycle. Can we please ask for your support to speak to your children about road safety and how they can keep themselves safe as they travel during the day.

At LHS, we regularly review how we can ensure that students and staff are as safe as possible at school. Recently, we have seen an increase in dangerous cycling, both outside the school gates on the way to and from school, and also with some students choosing to ride their bicycles inside school. This has led to some near misses. We do not want anyone to be injured due to dangerous cycling.

From June 2024 (after half-term), all students who cycle to school must have a Bicycle Licence in order to bring their bicycle into school. Securing this licence involves a simple process, where students and parents have to select the link below, and then agree to follow these simple rules around bicycle safety.

If students cycle to school without a licence, or if their licence is withdrawn, then they will be banned from bringing a bicycle on to the school site. This is done with the best interests of all of our students and staff in mind.

To secure a licence for your child, please click on this link. The link can also be found by scanning the barcode below.

Thank you, as always, for your support as we keep our school community safe.

LITTLE HEATH SCHOOL SAFE CYCLING RULES

Students who ride a bicycle to school must:

  1. Walk their bicycles at all times whilst on the school site. Bicycle riding is not permitted on the school site.

  1. Follow the laws of the road whilst cycling to and from school, including cycling on the left hand side of the road.

  1. Not have two students to a bicycle. Students cannot give a ride to another person, either sitting on the handlebars or elsewhere on the bicycle.

  1. Wear a helmet when on their journey to and from school.

  1. Follow all instructions from LHS staff around bicycles, including stopping and getting off their bicycle immediately when instructed.

Wellbeing Newsletter + Mental Health Week

Our Wellbeing Newsletter is published three times a year, and we hope the information and advice in this issue is helpful.

This issue looks forward to Mental Health Awareness Week in the week beginning 12th May. In this issue, as we enter exam season, we also look at some information about coping with exam stress.

If you would like to take a look at our elevens Little Heath School Wellbeing Newsletter, the link is as follows: https://www.littleheath.org.uk/parentportal/newsletter/?id=52

EXAM EXPECTATIONS AND A BLOCK ACCESS

Students are reminded that during the Summer examination period, the central staircase in A Block is out of bounds. Students needing to access A Block must use the stairs at the back of A Block by the Science department.

There is signage up which very clearly states that they are closed, and any students caught using these stairs may be issued an SDS.

HOT WEATHER REMINDERS

With the current weather conditions, students should be adequately prepared for the day with plenty of drinks. All students should bring a reusable water bottle to school every day, as part of our equipment requirements. They can be refilled at the water fountains around school site.

Students are also permitted to wear smart, tailored black shorts during warm weather. No other styles of shorts are acceptable.

With the current high pollen count, please can you also ensure your child has taken appropriate preventative medication (if necessary) in the morning to ensure they do not suffer during the day. We DO NOT have hayfever medication in school.

TERM 4 100% ATTENDANCE WINNERS

Well done to all students who had 100% attendance throughout term 4. There were 519 in total, which is nearly a third of all LHS students. The winners are selected at random from the list of names and we have one winner of the £20 voucher for each year group.

Congratulations to the term 4 winners below and remember we start from scratch every half term so everyone has a chance to be a winner in the 6 draws per year. Remember to keep checking attendance on Satchel One – 96% and above is the magic number so well done to all of you with this and to those of you who are working hard to improve your attendance.

We have now started exam season and have been really pleased with how well our students in Textiles, Art, Languages, Drama, and Business have performed in their practical and oral exams over the past two weeks.

We are also really proud of how our Y11 and Y13 students are approaching this ‘exam busy’ period, and hope that they will make the most of the intervention, support, and resources that we can offer.

As they prepare for their exams, we encourage you to remind them of how far they have come and the progress they have made. Your support and encouragement are invaluable during this time. Please ensure they have a balanced routine, with time for study, rest and relaxation.

We believe in every one of our students and are confident that their hard work will pay off. We will continue to support all students throughout the exam period and look forward to celebrating their achievements at their Proms and their results days in August.

We wish all of our Y11 & Y13 students all the very best of luck over the next few weeks, and please don't hesitate to get in contact with us if you have any concerns or questions.
