It's with mixed emotions we head into the final term of the year. For our Year 11 and Year 13 students, this marks a particularly significant chapter, as they are now fully immersed in their final exams. They’ve worked incredibly hard to reach this point, and we’re proud of the focus and resilience they continue to show.

Last month, we had the pleasure of celebrating their Little Heath journey during Give Something Back Day and the Year 13 final assembly. Both events were a fitting and emotional send-off. We hope they all keep working hard through the exam season, and wish them all the very best as they move on to exciting new challenges.

Cultures Day is always a much-loved occasion in our calendar. It was, once again, a colourful celebration of the diverse backgrounds, traditions, and experiences that make up our school community. Events like these remind us that what makes us different also brings us together.

This month saw a team competing in the NADAS Design, Make and Market Challenge. This all-girls group came up with a clever and meaningful idea to encourage and reward environmental action. I’m thrilled to share that the judges were equally impressed, awarding them first place. It’s a fantastic achievement and a proud moment, as they truly waved the flag for girls in STEM. This success highlights the value of the investment put into the technology department as part of the recent A Block development, and the potential of our students when given the resources and opportunities to thrive.

Looking ahead, we are already excited for the Sports Day events next term. Building on the momentum of our recent athletics success in Windsor, the event promises to be a fantastic showcase of talent, teamwork, and school spirit. Our athletes performed exceptionally well in Windsor, competing with heart and determination, and their achievements are a testament to the hard work they’ve put in, with many making it through to the Berkshire Championships next month.

Enjoy the half term break!

Mr David Ramsden
Headteacher

Cultural Celebration Evening & Cultures Day

Dancer on the stage

In April, we held our Cultural Celebration Evening.

This event is solely organised by students from the Diversity Society, from the auditions and planning, to presenting and running the show on the night!

It was another incredible evening of singing, dancing and a fashion show and flag parade. Well done to all involved for putting on another incredible show!Pandas in the flag parade

Students and staff really embraced our annual Cultures Day later that week. The school was full of colour and vibrant outfits from so many different cultures!

Students also enjoyed some tasty treats from across the world at breaktime!

Year 7 & Year 8 Dementia Awareness with Reading FC

Year 7 & Year 8 in goal at Reading FCA group of our Year 7 and Year 8 students were invited to take part in a Dementia Awareness event at the Select Car Leasing stadium with the Reading FC Community Trust and Age UK Berkshire.

The aim was to connect the community, provide support, and raise awareness of dementia.

Supporting a person with dementia The students were amazing ambassadors for LHS, talking to, playing games and walking with those with dementia. They took part in seated exercise and watched a choir perform.

It was a really heartwarming event and the students demonstrated such kindness and compassion.

They also got the opportunity to visit the changing rooms!

100% Attendance Winners

Well done to everyone who achieved 100% attendance throughout term 4. There were 519 in total, which is nearly a third of all LHS students!

The winners are selected at random from the list of names, and we select one winner of the £20 voucher for each year group. Congratulations to the term 4 winners below and remember we start from scratch every half-term, so everyone has a chance to be a winner in the six draws per year. Remember to keep checking the attendance on Satchel One – 96% and above is the magic number, so well done to all the students who achieved this and to those who are working hard to improve your attendance.

  • Roslyn, Y7
  • Shardae, Y8
  • Basil, Y9

We recently participated in Windsor's Area Athletics competition, where our students competed in eight events. Track events included the 100m, 200m, 300/400m, and 800m, while field events featured javelin, shot put, high jump, and long jump.

Several of our athletes advanced to the finals in their respective events, with many earning podium finishes and a few even taking home gold medals.

Throughout the day, every student represented Little Heath with outstanding behaviour, determination, and effort, making the school incredibly proud.

Well done!

See below for the results of this event and all other sports fixtures in April/May.

LET'S PUT WASTE IN ITS PLACE
Recycling in West Berkshire

Recent analysis conducted by West Berkshire shows that 42% of the waste in household black bins could have been recycled using the kerbside services provided - including food waste, cardboard, glass, plastics, and metals. This highlights a significant opportunity for residents to recycle more and waste less. Check your kerbside recycling and let's recycle more!

Black bin statistics

Did you know that residents in West Berkshire can recycle textiles from the kerbside? Items should be reused where possible - consider mending, upcycling into new items, donating to charity/friends/family or recycling into new materials.

Please put your textiles out in a clear or white sack labelled as 'textiles' next to your green boxes and bag. You can find out more about what can be recycled within West Berkshire here: www.westberks.gov.uk/recyclingcollection

TIPS FOR A MORE SUSTAINABLE GARDEN
Purley Sustainable Group

As we move into Spring, Purley Sustainability Group (PSG) has some garden sustainability tips to consider:

Remember, gardening can be enjoyed regardless of the size of your space.  Also, you will receive the benefits of sunshine, exercise and social interaction.

Have a plan: check out Library of Things or second-hand shops and local websites too.  Try to find items that are sustainably made, easily recycled or biodegradable, and where possible avoid plastic!

Be water-wise: Rainwater is better for plants than treated tap water. It's also cheaper and healthier for your plants too. Install a water butt!

Reduce waste: Your pile of fallen leaves can be used as mulch and also help add nutrients back to aid soil health.  Remember grass clippings and plant waste can go on the compost heap or in your Green Bin (if you subscribe to the service in West Berkshire). Keep garden green waste away from ponds, ditches, rivers and waterways.

Your lawn can help! A healthy lawn with some long grass and wildflowers benefits wildlife, tackles pollution and can even lock away carbon below ground. The nectar-rich flowers are loved by bees and butterflies and the seeds are eaten by small birds.

Mow lawns less often: Reducing your lawn cuts allows grass to grow a little longer, which will protect the soil and soil organisms from heat and also helps protect the grass roots, so they may look greener all summer!

Grow your own food and cut flowers: Some of the fruit, veg and flowers in the shops have an astonishing carbon footprint. You can reduce your impact by growing your own, even in small spaces.

Avoid chemicals & pesticides: Chemicals damage soil health, pollute water sources and harm a whole host of wildlife.  Try to create a balanced ecosystem in your garden, offering food, shelter and plants that attract wildlife throughout the food chain.

Grow your knowledge: Talk to neighbours and friends, they may know the answers you are looking for, equally you may be able to help them.

For further information on garden sustainability, please visit Garden Sustainability — Purley Sustainability Group or for sustainability in the home visit: www.purleysustainability.co.uk/sustainhome.
