The summer exam season has begun – an important time for our Year 11 and Year 13 students. I would like to commend them for their hard work and preparation so far. Exams can bring both challenge and opportunity, and we are here to support every student in achieving their very best. I encourage all students to continue working hard over the coming weeks, but also to take time to look after their wellbeing.

We love to celebrate the successes of our students both in and outside of school, and this past couple of months have seen some incredible achievements. On the sports field, we are celebrating a fantastic season for our football teams. Our Year 7 boys were crowned U12 Reading League champions after an unbeaten run; while our Year 9 team showed great resilience to win the U14 Reading League Cup in a thrilling final; and our Year 10 boys secured the U15 Reading Schools League title. This marks their fourth consecutive league win!

Congratulations to our Year 12 students who won the NADAS Debate Competition, outperforming two other local schools and securing a £300 prize for the school. You can read more about their success, and the achievements of a number of our students, in the articles below.

It seems our successes this month extend beyond our student body. I am delighted to share news that Mrs Bee, a member of our History department, has been recognised with an Inspiring History Teaching Award for the South East. This is a testament not only to her passion for the subject, but also to the impact she has on students’ curiosity, engagement, and love of learning. We are incredibly proud of her achievement and the recognition it brings to the high-quality teaching within our school.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support.

Mr David Ramsden
Headteacher

New School Minibus

This week we received a brand-new minibus! This will allow us to take students on trips and sports fixtures, and joins our fleet of three existing minibuses.

Year 7 Trip to Bayer

The UK faces a national skills shortage in STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. In particular, there are fewer and fewer females choosing this particular sector in which to work. To help address this, girls from the Computer Science afterschool club took part in a fantastic coding workshop at Bayer Pharmaceuticals. The workshop encouraged the girls to push their thinking and to get hands-on with robotics that could actually be used in the real world.

Year 7 students at Bayer

Using LEGO Education’s Spike Prime kits, students worked together to build and code an automated vehicle. The coding was all done using word-blocks within the Spike app. Throughout the session, students explored how coding and automation are reshaping industries like agriculture. It was not just about making something that moves, but about solving a real-world problem using motors, sensors, lights, and sound.

Year 7 students at Bayer

There is another workshop planned in June, and we are extending the invitation to other Year 7 girls who are interested in attending. The same students will be invited to an advanced workshop in October to help develop and build the basic skills they learnt.

Year 7 students at Bayer

This workshop supports the UK national curriculum at Key Stage 3, with links to computational thinking, control systems, and digital design. It’s a strong foundation for future studies in computing, engineering, or D&T (Design and Technology).

Year 10 Team place Second in Cultivate Enterprise Competition

Year 10 students, Abdul, Salim and Aamir, came second in the recent Cultivate Enterprise Competition at Zebra Technologies.

They had to create and pitch a new piece of technology that Zebra could use in the future. Their idea was StockIQ – a system that can be used by retailers to automatically check stock of items.

The judges were really impressed with the students; they commented that the team had answers to technical questions that even Zebra had taken three years to figure out!

They won £250 for themselves, and a bag of goodies each. Well done team!

NADAS Debate Competition Winners

Back in March, we entered the Newbury and District Agricultural Society (NADAS) Debate Competition, and we were up against two other local schools.

We entered two teams of Year 12 students – Rachel, Rylee and Sienna, and Flossie, George and Phoebe. The teams had to debate the topic of the family farm inheritance tax. They had to speak for 15 minutes as a group with one member being the chairperson, one member the proposer and one as the opposer.

We are proud to announce that Flossie, George and Phoebe's team won the competition and will receive £300 for the school.

Both teams performed brilliantly and were commended by the judges for their preparation, delivery of their speeches and the quality of their arguments.

Year 11 Sara takes GOLD in Junior Inter-Regional Regatta

We are proud to celebrate the outstanding achievement of Sara (Year 11, EAL), who recently competed in the 2026 Junior Inter-Regional Regatta held in Nottingham on Saturday 25 April.

Sara delivered an exceptional performance, securing the Gold Championship Medal in the Women’s Junior 16 Coxless Four (4-) category.

Competing at a national level, this accomplishment is a testament to her dedication, resilience, and hard work. Balancing the demands of academic study with competitive rowing, especially at Year 11, requires remarkable discipline. Sara’s success highlights not only her personal determination but also the positive values encouraged within our school community.

Well done Sara on this fantastic achievement! We look forward to seeing her continued success, both in and out of the classroom, as she embarks upon her GCSEs this term.

Year 9 Dylan's Reading Rocket U14 Success

Year 9 student, Dylan, will be with the Reading Rockets Basketball Team in Manchester this weekend, competing in the U14 Junior NBL Final Four event.

Dylan and the Reading Rockets team will be playing their semi-final match against Milton Keynes Breakers this Saturday 2 May at 2:00pm. The result of this game will take them through to the final, or a third place playoff match on Sunday.

If you would like to cheer Dylan on, you can watch the game live on Basketball England's YouTube channel here: Watch Live | Basketball England | YouTube
