REPORTING ABSENCE
What to do if your child is absent from school

If your child has to be absent from school, you must contact school every day of absence to notify us of the absence so that we know they are safely at home with you. Please:

  • Email attendance@littleheath.org.uk
  • Ensure you clearly state who your child is and their reason for absence before 8.30am if possible.
  • It is not enough to say they are unwell or ‘not coming in.’
  • Every half-day absence from school has to be classified by the school (not by the parents), as either AUTHORISED or UNAUTHORISED.
  • This is why specific information about the cause of any absence is always required, and is in fact a legal requirement.
  • Medical evidence will be asked for where attendance is below 90% and should always be provided for medical appointments.
  • Please note that routine GP and dental appointments should be made outside of school hours.
  • Unavoidable medical appointments do not usually require a full day’s absence and students are expected to attend school before and after appointments.

NHS/Government Absence poster A full explanation of authorised and unauthorised absence is in our Attendance Policy, which can be found on our website, here: LHS Attendance Policy

Sometimes it is hard to know if you should send your child to school or not. This poster may help and there is further guidance here: Is my child too ill for school? - NHS

The Department for Education's statutory guidance on attendance is as follows:

  • Where parents have decided to have their child registered at school, they have a legal duty to ensure their child attends school regularly.
  • Your child should attend school every day that school is open, except in a few allowable circumstances, such as being too ill to attend.
  • Where parents do not send their children to school, fixed penalty notices may be issued (as outlined in this poster).

Thanks for your help and support in helping to ensure your child attends regularly.

YEAR 8 Notices

YEAR 8 PARENTS' EVENING

We apologise that in some cases parents were unable to make appointments with the teachers they wanted to at the Y8 parents’ evening just before half-term. Unfortunately, some teachers teach more than one class in the same year group, and we cannot arrange extra parents’ evenings to accommodate this as, unlike at primary school, teachers may teach seven year groups (Y7 to Y13) and also have to attend additional evening presentations etc, so that is a lot of parents’ evenings in an academic year, and we cannot exceed the acceptable limit of parents’ evenings for teachers.

If you would like to speak to your child’s teacher directly regarding their progress or suitability for a particular GSCE subject, please email them directly. Staff email addresses are here: LHS Department Staff Contact

We are constantly reviewing all of our systems, and we are going to trial a slightly amended booking system for the Y7 parents’ evening on 24 April. At KS4 there is usually less of a problem with available appointment slots, most teachers only have 1 (or occasionally 2) classes and so appointments are more readily available.

Thanks for your feedback and understanding.

Mrs Ros Rayner
KS3 Assistant Head
