ADVANCE NOTICE: LOCKDOWN PRACTICE
Monday 2 February

Although we believe that the risk of needing to initiate a lockdown at Little Heath is very small, we cannot be complacent. We are therefore planning to run a practice lockdown on the afternoon of Monday 2 February. Students have been advised of this in advance by their tutors and everyone will be expected to take the practice seriously. Please encourage your child to behave appropriately and to follow all staff instructions during the practice.

Whilst we will expect students not to use their mobile phones during the lockdown practice, we wanted to warn parents about our plans in case any news that we have a lockdown in progress manages to filter out. We are keen to try to ensure that no unnecessary alarm is created by the practice.

If you are concerned that your child will find a practice lockdown particularly upsetting for any reason, please let us know by contacting Main Reception office@littleheath.org.uk, so that we can ensure the appropriate staff are made aware.

Following the lockdown practice, we will review our procedures again in the light of any feedback received from students and staff.

WORK EXPERIENCE PLACEMENTS
Student Work Experience Opportunities Required

In June, our Year 12 students will be taking part in work experience. If the company you work for would consider taking one of our students, we would love to hear from you!

We are especially in need of employers in Software Engineering. As many IT organisations are remote, or with offices abroad, it's proving particularly tricky this year to get students placed.

If you are able to help, or would like to find out more, please contact our Careers Lead, Mrs Eileen Wooller. Email ewooller@littleheath.org.uk or call 0118 9427337 x 278.

ENTERPRISE ADVISORS
Business Volunteers needed

The Berkshire Careers Hub is looking for business volunteers to come forward to join their team of Enterprise Advisors.

Enterprise Advisors partner with schools and colleges to improve their careers education, bridging the gap between young people and the world of work.

If you would like to find out more, please see the flyer here: Enterprise Advisor or go to: The Skills and Business Hub website. You can also email careersandenterprise@skillsandbusinesshub.org.

RISKING IT ALL
FREE Evening Production for Parents/Carers

On Tuesday 3 February (Period 1 & 2), we will be welcoming a theatre group into school to perform an interactive play called ‘Risking it All’. This year, there is an opportunity for parents and carers to watch the powerful production themselves at an evening performance, also on Tuesday 3 February.

'Risking It All' is a 50-minute interactive theatre production that addresses child sexual exploitation (CSE) and county lines. It highlights how risky behaviour among adolescents can lead to vulnerability and dangerous situations. Based on the lived experiences of teenagers, 'Risking It All' portrays the grooming process using victims’ personal accounts and helps young people spot the signs of exploitation.

This free event offers a unique opportunity for parents of secondary school students and those working with young people to gain insight into the consequences of risky behaviour and how to navigate difficult situations.

The show will be followed by a post-show Q&A with the theatre company and local professionals.

The performance is at Denefield School on Tuesday 3 February. Doors open at 7pm for an opportunity for parents to meet local youth support services. The performance starts at 7:30pm until 9:00pm.

You can book your FREE place here: 'Risking it All' Performance Tickets, Denefield School, Reading | TryBooking (please note the booking is ONLY for the parents' performance at Denefield. The show for Year 9 students at LHS does not require pre-booking).

SENIOR CHOIR
Supporting students who are studying Music at GCSE and A Level

We are pleased to announce the launch of Senior Choir, open to all students in Years 9-13.

Regular ensemble music-making is essential for deepening musical understanding, building confidence as a performer, and reinforcing listening skills which are fundamental to success across all three components of the GCSE and A Level Music courses.

Singing in a choir offers particular benefits including developing an internal sense of pitch and tonality, improving rhythmic accuracy, and building awareness of harmony and balance within an ensemble. Choral singing also encourages confident music reading, listening across parts and responsive musicianship, all of which strongly support both practical and academic aspects of GCSE and A Level Music.

Parents and carers of students in GCSE and A level Music classes have been emailed details earlier this week. Please refer to the letter for more information, or contact Mrs Berkeley, Head of Music, by emailing: gberkeley@littleheath.org.uk.

YEAR 11 YEARBOOK
Online Form to complete by Monday 2 February

Students wishing to be included in the Year 11 Yearbook need to complete the online form no later than this Monday, 2 February. Unfortunately, we will be unable to accept any entries after this date. Students are therefore reminded to ensure the form is completed before the deadline to avoid disappointment.

The link can be accessed here: Y11 Yearbook - Student entries online form

Another online form will be sent to parents/carers to obtain consent for inclusion in the Yearbook. Students without parental consent will not be included. We will also gauge interest in purchasing a copy to help us determine how many books need to be printed.

The Yearbook was well received by students last summer and was a lovely memento of their time at Little Heath School.
