It has been a great start to the new academic year for all year groups. Students have embraced a new routine to tackle punctuality which has made a real difference to their sharp start to the term.

In this month's issue, Ms Button talks about how well our new Year 7 students have settled in, quickly becoming part of the school community. It has been a pleasure for me to see them embracing secondary school life with enthusiasm and positivity.

September is the time we open our doors to the public and those looking for secondary school places for next year. I want to extend my thanks to everyone who contributed to our Open Evening, which was a tremendous success. We welcomed many prospective families, and the feedback has been incredibly positive. Our students were excellent ambassadors for the school, showcasing their talents and sharing their experiences. It was a real testament to the community spirit we have at Little Heath.

In our commitment to fostering good and open communication, we are introducing a new weekly online Bulletin for parents and carers. This bulletin will be emailed to you every Friday from 4 October. Our aim is to provide regular updates, reminders, and important news to help keep you informed throughout the week. We hope it strengthens the connection between school and home.

We encourage you to stay connected and share your thoughts as we continue working together to support your child here at Little Heath.

Mr David Ramsden
Headteacher

Year 9 & Year 11 Information Evening

Thanks to all the Year 9 and Year 11 parents who came along to our information evening earlier this week and attended some of our workshops.

If you missed the event, or would like to revisit any of the presentations and download the resources, you can find them on the website here.

Nut Allergy information from Culinera

We are aware that there has been recent news about some mustard products containing nuts, which may be a concern for people with nut allergies. Please see the article here for more clarification.

Our catering team at Culinera have confirmed that they have removed the products that could have been affected from service and production. They are also in talks with their core suppliers to keep them as updated as possible.

Parent Wellbeing and Support

We regularly post support articles for families, parents and carers on our 'Support for Parents' page of our website.

We currently have information on the West Berkshire Autism Team, including a calendar of events for workshops covering advice for a new diagnosis, tips for transition to secondary school, and post 16 support.

We have also signposted workshops for those supporting children who are living with a childhood trauma.

Please do visit the page from time to time to see more useful information on ways you can support the child in your care and get advice.

eSafety

This week, as we do at the start of each academic year, we talk to all our students about the importance of staying safe online. If you would like some advice about eSafety, there are some great resources available on the Internet Matters website.

Year 7 students at Science Club with Mrs Nazar

Year 7 students at Science Club with Mrs Nazar

Well, we hoped that they would settle in quickly and sure enough, they have! The Year 7s are well and truly part of the Little Heath Family now. It has been so lovely getting to know them all and seeing them embracing our ethos of spreading kindness and celebrating success. They have been keen to help one another and show us how well they can learn and behave.

It was wonderful to have so many students offering to help us at Open Evening. It is so lovely for Year 5s and 6s to see that students who have only just joined us, feel comfortable and confident enough to show others around the school! We are so proud of our Transition Programme, and it’s clear that it has worked so far.

Mr Linz, Mrs Apsey and I were so impressed with the sensible and sensitive way in which they approached our Safeguarding and ESafety Assembly; they asked and answered lots of questions and were incredibly mature.  We are absolutely confident that they all know who to talk to if they are worried about anything.

We are really looking forward to a term filled with positivity, lovely relationships, hard work and successes to celebrate. Thank you so much for your support, and please get in touch if you have any questions or concerns. From now on, we will no longer use the transition email address. Please contact form tutors in the first instance.

Have a good weekend.

Ms Button
Deputy Head (KS3)

Welcome back from our Head Students

Hello everyone!

We are Aaron and Zoe, the Head Students for the 2024/25 academic year. We act as the leads of the Senior Student Leadership Team (SSLT), a group of ten year 13 students working towards improvements in a wide range of topic areas.

This year, our particular focus will be on improving our sustainability in school through several eco-initiatives, and the commencing of student-led academic mentoring for younger students.

SSLT will also be working with students across the whole school by appointing year 12 prefects to assist with our work, and leading the School Council, to get more voices heard and more feedback taken.

We’re looking forward to sharing more of our work with you across the year!

Open Evening

We had a fantastic Open Evening earlier this month, with over 500 visitors in attendance. It is always a true showcase of what we have to offer and it was wonderful to see so many faces engaging in the activities on offer and eager to learn more about our school!

Huge thanks go to all our student helpers and Sixth Form Ambassadors who were amazing representatives as ever. Their enthusiasm and passion for Little Heath shone through!

Applications for secondary school places close on 31 October. If you would like any further information about joining Little Heath School, please visit our website.

Each year, the Education Tent at the Newbury Show hold an art competition for secondary schools, with the theme ‘Environmental Art’.

Last weekend we displayed our Coral Reef - it is a collaborative piece created by Year 8 students during their Year 7 Earth Day back in April, supported by Student Ambassadors from the University of Reading.

Members of the Eco-Committee have been working to complete the piece over the summer and autumn term.

I am really pleased to say we received a ‘Highly Commended’ award for our piece. Thank you to everyone who contributed, the final outcome was such a fun and joyous piece of work!
