WHOLE SCHOOL Notices

BICYCLE LICENCE
From 2 November 2026

From 2 November, all students who cycle to school must have a Bicycle Licence in order to bring their bicycle into school. Securing this licence involves a simple process, where students and parents have to select the link below, and then agree to follow these simple rules around bicycle safety:

  1. Walk their bicycles at all times whilst on the school site. Bicycle riding is not permitted on the school site.
  2. Follow the laws of the road whilst cycling to and from school, including cycling on the left hand side of the road.
  3. Not have two students to a bicycle. Students cannot give a ride to another person, either sitting on the handlebars or elsewhere on the bicycle.
  4. Wear a helmet when on their journey to and from school.
  5. Follow all instructions from LHS staff around bicycles, including stopping and getting off their bicycle immediately when instructed.

If students cycle to school without a licence, or if their licence is withdrawn, then they will be banned from bringing a bicycle on to the school site. This is done with the best interests of all of our students and staff in mind.

To secure a licence for your child, please click on this link: Apply for an LHS Bicycle Licence

REQUIRED STATIONERY

Being fully equipped and ready to learn helps students make a positive start to every lesson, reduces unnecessary disruption and ensures that valuable learning time is not lost. All students are expected to have the following equipment with them every day:

  • Pencil case
  • Pen
  • Pencil
  • Highlighter
  • Rubber
  • Purple pens
  • Calculator
  • Ruler

We would be grateful if you could please check that your child has all the above equipment and that items are replaced when they run out, are lost or are no longer usable. Many stationery items can be purchased from our on-site Resources shop (L3, A Block). We also have some stationery packs, calculators and gum shields available for purchase on ParentMail.

FREE SCHOOL MEALS ALLOWANCE
Changes to Eligibility Criteria

There have been some changes to the Free School Meals (FSM) programme, which came into effect on 1 September 2026.

The government has broadened the eligibility criteria, meaning that a greater number of families will now qualify for free school meals. In particular, from September, all children in households receiving Universal Credit will be entitled to free school meals, regardless of overall household income.

For more information, and to apply, visit our website: Little Heath School | Catering

Please note: The current allowance for FSM at Little Heath School is £2.80 per child, per day. Any additional items purchased over this amount or during break time will need to be paid for via the ‘cashless’ system.

INSTRUMENTAL LESSONS
Music at Little Heath

We are delighted to offer students at Little Heath the opportunity to take instrumental or singing lessons in school. Learning a musical instrument is a fantastic way to develop confidence, creativity, self-discipline and resilience, while also providing an enjoyable and rewarding outlet for self-expression. Research consistently shows that studying music can support wider academic achievement, helping to improve concentration, memory and problem-solving skills. We would strongly encourage students to take advantage of this exciting opportunity and discover the many benefits that music can bring to both their education and personal development.

We have a number of specialist teachers who come into school to teach a variety of instruments as individual, pair or group lessons. Fees vary depending on lesson length and teacher. If your child is in receipt of Pupil Premium then please get in touch before signing up as the school may be able to fund/subsidise the fees.

  • For information about guitar (electric or acoustic), piano, woodwind, brass or voice please see the information below from Berkshire Music Trust (BMT). BMT is our county music service and provide our teachers on these instruments.
  • For lessons on drums please contact Hamish Stewart or ask your music teacher for a letter: hcsdrumtuition@googlemail.com
  • For lessons on keyboard please contact Thomas Marek or ask your music teacher for a letter: thomasmarekmusic@gmail.com

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Berkeley or your child’s music teacher.

WORK SHADOWING WEEK
1 March 2027

As part of our careers' education programme, we are pleased to inform you that all students will take part in a Work Shadowing Week during the week beginning 1 March 2027.

The purpose of the week is to give students a valuable insight into the world of work and help them develop a greater understanding of different careers, workplaces and professional expectations. This is a work shadowing opportunity rather than formal work experience, and students will spend the week observing and learning about a particular role or organisation.

Students will be responsible for arranging their own placement. This may be with:

  • A family member or friend
  • A local business
  • A community organisation
  • Any appropriate workplace that can provide an insight into working life

The placement does not need to be directly linked to a student's future career aspirations. The key aim is for students to gain a flavour of the workplace, understand how organisations operate, and develop their awareness of the skills and behaviours valued by employers.

More detailed information, including arrangements, timescales and any documentation that needs to be completed, will be shared with students and parents this term. We wanted to provide advance notice so that families have plenty of time to begin considering and securing a suitable placement.

We look forward to supporting students in this exciting opportunity, and thank you in advance for your assistance.
