Year 9 poems for the NHS

Year 9 commemorate the NHS heroes with their inspiring poems

In honour of the NHS's 72nd birthdy this week, the English department invited our Year 9 students to write poems inspired by our NHS heroes. We received some truly beautifully written tributes! Below is the winning poem and the four runners up, along with some of the rainbows created by our students during lockdown.

1st place: Amaani - Stirling

Some of my earliest memories linger in a room
Being poked and prodded
Everlasting gloom
Everything I said continuously being uploaded

Different doctor every time
The diagnosis stayed unclear
Saying a word seemed like a crime
All I wished was for everyone to disappear

Years later, I was back
Something else had arose
One other thing that I lack
If only this was a door that I could close

I thank them, I really do
They helped me in dark times:
The Doctor
The Nurse
The Receptionist
Those behind the mask-
And those behind the scenes

True heroes in disguise
In their scrubs, masks and protective gear
Each one was more the wise
The gratefulness in me almost makes me tear

2nd place: Anne - Warwick

They are the fighters.
They are ones who have witnessed the worst
Who have held trembling hands,
Dried teary eyes,
And understand.

They are the ones who have comforted,
Who have held children close,
Supported broken family,
And understand.

They are the ones who have had to make choices,
Who have taken the hard times,
Felt the pain of it,
And understand.

They are the ones who are here for us,
Who have difficult personal lives,
But still care,
And understand.

They are the ones who also had to let go,
Who have had to fight the tears,
Helped others through it,
And understand.

They are the ones who had to deliver the news,
Who listen to the broken screams through the phone,
Stay on the line to apologise and comfort,
And understand.

They are the ones who have seen it all,
Who have felt all the pressure and emotion,
Understood and cared for everyone no matter what,
They are the fighters.

3rd place: Lily - Arundel

Quarantined with covid-19

The plastic PPE rustles as they move,
They only wish they could touch to soothe,
The marks run across their face,
From tiredness trying to protect the human race.

They’ve worked together to save you and me,
So, protect yourself from covid-19,
And stay at home quarantined,

The wards are as busy as a supermarket sweep,
Dr’s and nurses in and out not getting enough sleep,
How do they put our lives before theirs?
As they try to not get caught up in tears.

They’ve worked together to save you and me,
So, protect yourself from covid-19,
And stay at home quarantined.

The ventilators humming,
And machines beeping,
To the sounds of those weeping,
Blocking out the Ni Naw of the blue lights which were flashing.

They’ve worked together to save you and me,
So, protect yourself from covid-19,
And stay at home quarantined.

Stay alert, Control the virus, Save lives

4th place: Daniel - Conway

Superhero’s come in all different guises,
The frontline staff fighting the invisible enemy,
No thought for themselves just unwelcome surprises,
Separated from their families to protect our destiny.

No protection at first but carried on bravely,
Wearing gloves and masks at last they were protected,
They didn’t complain even though the Government were naive,
There hard-work helped save the infected.

They are the light in the darkness,
Helping us see the bright,
They are inspiring and selfless with their acts of kindness,
Providing the calm when the world is in fright.

What can we do to show our support,
Stay at home and follow the law,
Clapping hands for the NHS every Thursday,
Showed our gratitude and the communities awe
