Work Experience & Insight Events
Summer Volunteering at Berkshire Libraries for students aged 13+
West Berkshire Libraries have a great opportunity for young people to volunteer over the summer holidays. This could be a valuable chance to learn new skills, make a positive contribution to our local community and give you the confidence to talk to adults and children to encourage an enjoyment of reading. It would also look great on your CV!
With over 3000 children taking part last year West Berkshire Libraries are again challenging all 4–11-year-olds to participate in the national scheme organised by The Reading Agency. The goal is for each participant to read six books and to visit their local library at least 3 times throughout the summer, encouraging a lifelong love of books, reading and visiting the library.
The Reading Agency is pleased to announce that the theme for this year's Summer Reading Challenge is Story Garden – Adventures in Nature and the Great Outdoors, developed in partnership with public libraries. The theme this year is all about inspiring children’s imaginations and exploring the magical connection between nature and storytelling.
Children are challenged to get reading over the summer holidays. From July to September, through taking part in the free Challenge, children will be encouraged to dive into an enchanting world of magical creatures, nature and stories.
You can read more about it here: The Summer Reading Challenge 2025 'Story Garden' Takes Reading to the Great Outdoors
https://readingagency.org.uk/the-summer-reading-challenge-2025-story-garden-takes-reading-to-the-great-outdoors/
To be able to deliver this we would welcome some volunteer help. We are looking for individuals who are happy to tell children about the challenge and how it works when they first visit the library, then to give out their ‘rewards’ as they go along, encourage them to keep reading and eventually present them with a certificate and medal for completing it.
We are looking for volunteers from Saturday 5 July until Saturday 6 September 2025 to help in all our libraries. Even a couple of hours on a few days during the holidays would make a difference and we’d be really grateful.
If you are interested in helping, then please apply online at www.westberks.gov.uk/volunteer
Arts & Crafts Volunteers
We are also looking for artistic/crafty student that might like to assist with easy paper craft activities on a Wednesday morning throughout the summer. Please share the message below as we have lots of space still available over the summer.
If you are interested in helping, then please apply online at www.westberks.gov.uk/volunteer
