Oxford University – Admissions Process

We are pleased to be able to share with you some more information about our admissions process this year, in particular regarding admissions tests. This year we have separated the registration and booking processes which we hope will enable all candidates to benefit equally from the first-come, first-served allocation of test appointments.

Registering early, ahead of the August test booking period is strongly recommended, especially if candidates require adjustments/access arrangements, so they are in a position to secure a convenient test appointment as soon as this opens.

We would also like to remind you about our upcoming Open Days on 2 and 3 July and look forward very much to meeting you and your students there.

If you have any questions, as ever, please do contact us via ox.ac.uk/ask.

2025 Admissions tests

For students applying to Oxford this year, it is likely that the admissions process for their chosen course will include an admissions test. Tests are used alongside a range of other information to help us fairly assess candidates’ academic potential and suitability for many of our courses.

The following Oxford admissions tests will be online and taken by candidates on a computer at a Pearson VUE test centre on these dates:

  • Ancient History and Classical Archaeology Admissions Test (AHCAAT) – 24 October
  • Biomedical Sciences Admissions Test (BMSAT) – 21-24 October, 27 October
  • Classics Admissions Test (CAT) – 22-24 October
  • Mathematics Admissions Test (MAT) – 22-23 October
  • Modern Languages Admissions Test (MLAT) – 24 October
  • Philosophy Test (PhilAT) – 24 October
  • Physics Admissions test for Physics, Engineering and Materials Science (PAT) – 22-23 October
  • Thinking Skills Assessment (TSA) – 21-24 October, 27 October

Note: In 2025, candidates applying for any course with History do not need to take the History Admissions test (HAT).

Candidates applying for Medicine (or Graduate Entry Medicine) will need to take the Pearson VUE UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test) with arrangements and charges as advertised by Pearson VUE. https://www.ucat.ac.uk/

Candidates for Law will take the Pearson VUE LNAT, with arrangements and charges as advertised by Pearson VUE. https://lnat.ac.uk/

Oxford Admissions tests - Test registration: 18 June – 19 September (6pm BST)

Candidates will be able to register for their admissions test free of charge via the Oxford Admissions Test Registration portal any time from 18 June until 19 September (6pm BST). https://oxford.useclarus.com/login

When registering, they will create their own user account profile and select the relevant test. They will also be able to request access arrangements, for example extra time, providing they are able to upload accompanying supporting evidence from a medical or educational specialist. Candidates who require access arrangements are strongly encouraged to read carefully our admissions tests policy on access arrangements to ensure their supporting evidence meets the required criteria. We also recommend that school staff responsible for providing this evidence, such as specialist teachers, SENCOs, year heads, UCAS coordinators, or head teachers, review the policy to ensure the documentation they submit is compliant. https://www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/undergraduate/applying-to-oxford/guide/admissions-tests/accessarrangements

Requesting access arrangements

Any requests for access arrangements will need to be approved by Oxford before candidates will be able to book a test with these adjustments in place. Approvals can take up to five working days for standard arrangements and ten working days or more for non-standard arrangements. At this point, candidates requiring certain physical arrangements, for example a separate room, will be sent a form by Pearson VUE. Once they have completed and returned this, Pearson VUE will contact the candidate to finalise their booking.

If candidates require adjustments/access arrangements, we strongly advise that they register as soon as possible, so they are in a position to secure a convenient test appointment as soon as bookings open in August. It is the candidate’s responsibility to register early enough to allow sufficient time for their access arrangements to be processed and approved before the final booking deadline. Failure to do so may mean they are unable to book a test place.

Candidates who do not have sufficient evidence are advised to wait until this is available before registering. If a candidate is concerned their evidence will not be available before registration closes, they should contact us using the ‘messages’ option on the navigation menu on their Oxford admissions test registration platform.

UCAS ID

To register, candidates will need to have a UCAS ID number, so will need to have started their UCAS application (although not submitted it). This is mandatory so that later, after our application deadline of 15 October, we can match their Oxford application with their test booking. If we cannot do this, their test booking is likely to be withdrawn. Only Oxford applicants are eligible to sit Oxford’s admissions tests.    Test booking: 18 August – 26 September (6pm BST) https://www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/undergraduate/applying-to-oxford/guide/admissions-tests/ucasidpolicy

Registered candidates with no access arrangements or approved standard access arrangements (including most time-based arrangements, a glucose monitor, a beverage or an access locker) will be able to book their tests via a link from their Oxford Admissions Tests portal dashboard to the Pearson VUE test website any time from 18 August until 26 September (6pm BST). Using the address they have given when registering, Pearson VUE’s test centre functionality will automatically suggest the nearest test centres. At this point, if a candidate knows they will be away from home on their test day, they can override this default selection and enter another location to search.

Bookings are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis so the sooner candidates register and book their test/s, the more likely they are to find a convenient test centre and appointment.

For candidates with standard non-time-based arrangements, e.g. a separate room, who have been requested to fill out the form mentioned above, or with non-standard arrangements that require an implementation plan, Pearson VUE will directly contact them in good time to arrange their test booking.

Further details and guidance are available via the admissions test webpages on our undergraduate admissions website.

Personal statements - Format change

You may already be aware that the format of the UCAS personal statement is changing for entry in 2026 and thereafter. Comprehensive information can be found on the UCAS website and we would strongly recommend this to all candidates. There is also extensive information about personal statements and UCAS applications more generally on our undergraduate admissions website.

Super-curricular activities

Students looking to maximise the strength of their Oxford application should be advised to explore educational activities beyond the school curriculum. This can be anything from podcasts, documentaries, trips to a museum, books, magazines, online programmes and more. These activities will be particularly helpful to them when writing their personal statement and preparing for interviews, but also in giving students a broader insight into potential degree choices. Our Digital Resource hub is a collection of thought-provoking articles, videos, blogposts and event recordings which map onto the undergraduate degrees offered at Oxford. https://www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/undergraduate/increasing-access/ug-digital-resources

We have a range of suggested subject resources available on our website, which might inspire students when thinking about which course to study. These are intended to give an idea of the kind of material students might engage with during a course at Oxford. We've also included links to the University's current research to give an idea of how academic research can impact upon society.

2025 Undergraduate Open Days

Our 2025 undergraduate Open Days will be held on 2 and 3 July and 19 September. The Open Days offer prospective applicants the chance to look around colleges and departments and explore our beautiful city. https://www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/undergraduate/open-days-and-visits

As Oxford is a collegiate university with no central campus, our undergraduates belong to an Oxford college. These academic communities are typically where students live, have their tutorials, socialise and study. Open Days are the ideal time for potential applicants to discover our colleges and get a feel for what studying at Oxford might be like.

Subject departments and faculties are not normally open to visitors so these Open Days provide a perfect opportunity to explore as well as meet tutors and current students. There will also be sessions covering the admissions process and introducing Oxford’s styles of teaching, such as tutorials.

Colleges and department timetables are now available https://www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/undergraduate/open-days-and-visits/college-timetables

https://www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/undergraduate/open-days-and-visits/department-timetables

You can register to stay up to date on our Open Days information.
